Abiding Communion with Christ Heals Nations

We just rediscovered this thought provoking title, “Let My People Go” and it brought great inspiration to reflect on foundation that Dr. John E Douglas, Sr. laid when he started World Missionary Evangelism in 1957. His pioneer work with caring for orphans and empowering native missionaries to do ever more strategic evangelism and his family’s passion for religious liberty from America to across the globe have been transformational in healing nations.

The Big List of Notable Church Technology, Ministry Tools & Christian Apps

By Church Relavance

There’s no shortage of Christian leaders thinking about what the intersection of faith and technology should be. Some charge ahead embracing the latest tech trends to create the next era of church technology and ministry tools. And others cautiously wait and consider what might be lost by so boldly embracing the unknown. But one thing is certain -people are increasingly asking questions at the intersection of ministry & tech.

  • What is the best church management software?
  • What is the best Bible app?
  • Should I get a church app?
  • Is church online biblical?
  • How can I do internet evangelism?

We aren’t out to answer these questions or rank who’s the best. But we have curated a list of what we believe to be the most notable and a few novel uses of technology in Christian ministry. Please use this list not to compete but to be inspired by how technology can be used for the good of God’s Kingdom.

Bible Apps

Neubible: Bible App

At the core of the Christian faith is Scripture. In a sense, the Bible is a commodity that goes beyond the borders of denominations and ministry models. And this dynamic is what drives Bible technology to be the most versatile category on this list.

Scriptive

Free via web & iOS
Scriptive asks how you feel and why and then recommends Bible verses that apply to your unique circumstances. But what makes Scriptive so cool is that the verses it recommends are those with the highest probability of spiritual impact. Building upon millions of data points shared by YouVersion and OpenBible.info, Scriptive recommends verses based on how they’ve previously moved people in similar circumstances. And Scriptive’s recommendation engine is constantly improving as it makes it easy for users to report back which recommended verses were most relevant. It’s a thoughtful approach that even applies insights from neuroscience to create a user experience that helps people be more receptive to Scripture by removing emotional or cognitive barriers.

Niche Bible Tech

Digital Bible Platform API

Digital Bible Library by United Bible Societies

The Digital Bible Library  (DBL) was birthed out of Every Tribe Every Nation, an alliance of Bible translation groups working together to translate the Bible into all 6,800 languages. The DBL is managed by the United Bible Societies and exists to preserve and safeguard texts into a standardized format as well as streamline the usage of its translations. Those who are granted a “library card” are able to leapfrog beyond the historically cumbersome process of getting permission to use translations and can even have privileges like storing the Bible text on their own servers.

Digital Bible Platform (API) by Faith Comes by Hearing

The Digital Bible Platform (DBP) is perhaps the easiest path to getting digital Bible texts for your projects. However, it limits you to only accessing the texts via an API every time. Because it lacks the rights to store Bible texts on your own server, it may not be the best fit for more robust Bible applications, but it is an ideal solution for small projects and the majority of Bible technology. Many people don’t realize that almost all Bible translations are bound by significant royalties and restrictions. It can be a slow and painful process to get access to the texts. Faith Comes By Hearing cleverly gets around this by establishing the legal contracts and payments with each translation owner and then lets you piggyback off of their access for free via an API.

Sovee (translation)

Sovee is known for their advances in translation and video streaming used by big brands and corporations around the world. They are also pioneering Bible translation with a new approach that mashes up 3 different translation models into one hyperefficient process. Traditional Bible translations takes 2 years to translate the book of Luke into a new language. Sovee has reported that a team of 2 people working full-time for 6 months can translate the entire Bible into a new language with 98% accuracy. Independent field tests haven’t matched that ideal yet, but it is still fast and an exciting exploration into what could be.

That isn’t to say they have the perfect platform, but they do have a budget that lets them take their time. This affords them the luxury to grow the platform slowly through controlled batches of new users, which offer insights into improvements. So new users, test, revise, repeat. It’s an approach that has grown Table into a pretty cool platform. Churchix by Face-Six

Churchix is controversial, but it is notable, so we’ve included it on this list. Churchix uses facial recognition software for church attendance. As I’ve said before, “With the concept of facial recognition software is an underlying subconscious hunch that this is wrong because it’s an inauthentic substitute for one-on-one relationships. Imagine, ‘And then the apostles walked into the assembly, and their faces were scanned.’ It seems like it misses the authenticity. However what once seemed shocking will gradually seem normal. Ultimately, we’re going to see this type of technology become far more prominent.”

Tips on Reading the Bible Daily

1. Start reading the Bible today — there is no better time, and there’s no reason to wait.

2. Set aside a specific time each day. Set your schedule and then stick to it. Mornings are great, but feel free to use any time that works consistently for you.

3. Read the Bible for the sake of learning, not simply to accomplish your next reading. Say a short prayer to God before you begin, asking the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and understanding, then be refreshed by the words you read!

‘Incredible’: The Absolutely Stunning Thing That’s Happening to the Bible in Iran

The monumentally popular YouVersion Bible app has officially topped 200 million installs across the globe, with developers announcing that the most popular verse in the app’s history is Romans 12:2.

That scripture, which is both the most read and shared, reads as follows: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Produced by Life.Church, an Oklahoma-based megachurch that has made a name for itself by streaming its services throughout the world, founders say that the tool is transforming lives, with increases of up to 1,886 percent in usage in places like Iran over the past two years.

“What God is doing through YouVersion is incredible — changing mobile devices into Bibles that people carry with them everywhere they go,” app creator and Life.Church pastor Bobby Gruenewald said in a statement. “As we see the magnitude of 200 million installs, what we’re really celebrating is what that number represents: countless moments of individuals transformed by their time in the Bible.”

Perhaps the most notable development is the locations in which use of the digital Bible is continuously thriving, with the most prevalent searches among users overall involving “marriage, love, faith, prayer and fasting.”

The YouVersion Bible app, which allows people to read the Bible and connect with like-minded believers, has been installed among individuals in every nation on Earth, reported “triple-digit growth and beyond” in places like Cameroon, Iran, Suriname, Bulgaria and other locations, since hitting a 100 million download benchmark in July 2013, according to a press release.

The remarkable growth has expanded the initial offering of 12 Bible versions in two languages to 1,237 versions in 900 languages. Find out more about the YouVersion Bible app here.

The Worlds Most Popular Bible Verses According YouVersion Users’ Surpassing 200 Million

By Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra, Christianity Today.

Every second, 112 people open the Bible app. Here’s what they’re looking at.
YouVersion Bible App friends

Every second, the world conducts mBible-App-friends-youVersion-300x178ore than 40,000 Google searches, creates 5 new Facebook profiles, and opens YouVersion’s Bible App 112 times.

In the app, three bookmarks are created, four verses are shared, and 18 verses are highlighted. More than 50 Bible chapters are listened to, and 342 chapters are read.

YouVersion, launched by Life.Church in 2008, announced today that the Bible app has now topped 200 million installs. In its third consecutive year of adding 50 million installs, the app now offers the Bible in more than 1,200 versions and 900 languages.

“What God is doing through YouVersion is incredible—changing mobile devices into Bibles that people carry with them everywhere they go,” said Bobby Gruenewald, innovation pastor at Life.Church. “As we see the magnitude of 200 million installs, what we’re really celebrating is what that number represents: countless moments of individuals transformed by their time in the Bible.”

As part of its annual review of user activity, YouVersion highlighted the most popular Bible verses in the 10 countries where it has been installed the most.

This year, the favorite verse of the United States and Brazil was bookmarked, shared, highlighted, and listened to so much that it beat out every other verse in the app’s history.

That verse was Romans 12:2: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will” (NIV). American users preferred the New International Version, while Brazilians preferred the English Standard Version.

Other top verses were also favorites in more than one country (and proved popular last year as well) but varied in translation.

Mexico, the United Kingdom, and South Korea engaged the most with Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (NIV).

Wycliffe’s New Method Can Translate New Testament in Weeks

By Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra

Ever since Wycliffe Associates (WA) debuted a new approach that can translate almost half of the New Testament in two weeks, the smaller sister organization of Wycliffe Bible Translators (WBT) has been inundated with requests.

The process, called Mobilized Assistance Supporting Translation (MAST), relies heavily on the local church to provide translators that are fluently bilingual. In a radical shift from earlier work, translators work simultaneously on the text instead of sequentially, and they learn translation principles (including proper names, idioms, and key terms) as they go instead of attending weeks of training beforehand.

By the end of 2014, WA had 115 projects underway. It added another 133 in 2015, and expects to begin another 500 in 2016. The world has about 4,100 living languages without any Bible translations, according to Mission Frontiers, the online magazine of Frontier Ventures.

“This is a breathtaking moment in the history of the church,” WA president Bruce Smith said in October when announcing MAST’s growth. “Christ’s Great Commission is doable. We can share God’s Word with every language group on earth—in our lifetime.”

Is this the death knell for longstanding translation practices, which invest years into language training and translation preparation?

Not quite, said Roy Peterson, CEO of the American Bible Society (ABS). That model was already dead.

“There is no such thing as traditional right now,” he said. “We are watching methodologies evolve right before our eyes that are accelerating translations.” ABS recently completed a New Testament in Zambia in three and a half years, he said. In 1980, the same text would have taken 10 years, according to Mission Frontiers.

Three and a half years is still a lot longer than MAST’s claims. But the accuracy of MAST was recently called into question by a peer-review assessment team, which included members of the Seed Company, Word for the World, WBT Ethiopia, and WBT Africa. They observed a two-week MAST project in Ethiopia in August.

While cautioning that “this review should not necessarily be interpreted as a ‘blanket assessment’ of other MAST implementations,” the group found that “the rate of progress and the quality achieved clearly do not substantiate the widely publicized claims made for the accelerated rate of translation that can be achieved through the MAST methodology.”

The review group had trouble with both of MAST’s time-saving techniques.

Having different translators work simultaneously on different parts of a Bible chapter “can only result in major inconsistencies in style and terminology, especially where they are working from different source versions,” the report said.

It also warned against skimping on pre-translation training: “Such shortcuts may give the impression that the goal is being achieved faster, but they inevitably result in loss of quality.”

A first draft of the Gospel of Mark in five languages was “achieved faster in the two-week Ethiopia MAST workshop than is typical in other initial translation workshops, but the quality was such that much more work will be needed to bring it to an acceptable quality and in a condition ready for wider testing,” the report said.

While all Bible translators want both speed and accuracy, accuracy is more important, six organizational members of Every Tribe Every Nation told CT. The alliance includes some of the world’s largest Bible agencies.

“The only thing worse than keeping someone waiting for the Bible in his or her heart language is a new translation that jeopardizes the clear communication of this same gospel message,” they wrote.

Making errors can cause lasting damage, said Peterson, whose society is part of the Every Tribe Every Nation coalition. “There’s something so delicate and important about the transmission of the Word of God. If we don’t give [local translators] the tools and training, if we let Scripture go out that has not had the care, then I think we’re playing fast and loose with the Word of God.”

Seed Company CEO Samuel Chiang agreed.

“There is deep historical precedence for training,” he said, pointing to the education Old Testament rabbis received. “I would never want to overweigh people with things, but [training] ahead of time is important.”

That doesn’t mean that there isn’t a place for MAST, both Chiang and Peterson said.

“We want to build bridges with everyone who is trying new things,” Peterson said. “[WA is] passionate about translation and we want to affirm that, and ask in what ways we can make sure quality and accuracy are the hallmark of whatever methodology we embrace.”

The report had “elements that are helpful inputs and other parts that are both inaccurate and perhaps not as helpful,” WA’s Smith told CT. The Ethiopia MAST project was hampered by some specific problems, he said.

“We encouraged the church to bring whoever they chose to participate, and we ended up with people who were not actually fluent in two languages,” he said. “Bilingual speakers are really the foundation for all Bible translation.”

The lack of language skill “significantly handicapped the outcome,” he said. So did the size of the teams, which were smaller than WA prefers for MAST.

But letting the local church choose the number and fluency of the translators remains one of WA’s core commitments, he said. “Part of the results in Ethiopia are the result of allowing the church to exercise their full authority over stewarding God’s word in their language.”

The MAST process, correctly used, still turns out a level of accuracy that rivals slower translation methods, Smith said. But that doesn’t mean it’s perfect.

“We’re still on a learning curve,” he said. “We’re improving this.”

While MAST increases the options available to local churches, it doesn’t make other Bible translation methods obsolete, Smith said. “There remains an overwhelming number of languages without even one verse of Scripture. At this point, every strategy is needed to get God’s Word to every nation.”

Lysa TerKeurst’s ‘First 5’ Bible App Encouraging Christians to Give God the First 5 Minutes of Their Day Goes Viral What Do You Do First Thing in the Morning

Lysa TerKeurst, bestselling author and Proverbs 31 Ministries president, wants her First 5 app to get Christians into the habit of reaching for the Word before giving the world their full attention — and it seems many women are eager to do just that.

“When social media and email are the first things we look at in the morning, our hearts get set on busyness and wrapped up in the shouts of the world. I want to equip women to truly put God first — to truly give Him the first moments of their day — through this app,” TerKeurst said in a statement shared with The Christian Post.

The First 5 app triggered more than 100,000 downloads within the first two days of it being made available and “hit (No. 2) in the Lifestyle app category in the Apple store,” according to a representative for TerKeurst’s nonprofit women-focused Proverbs 31 Ministries and Crowd Hub, the California tech firm that helped bring the free devotional app to life. CP was informed that First 5, available since July 20, had been downloaded more than 200,000 times as of Monday afternoon.

The Proverbs 31 Ministries app takes readers through the entire Bible, beginning with the book of John. “From there, we’ll go through Genesis and as we study together, we’ll unpack each book using one verse per chapter, per day. So, instead of your verse of the day being random, you’ll start to sense real progress in your understanding of the Bible by using First 5 for just 5 minutes each morning,” the app promises in the “Welcome to First 5!” message on its news screen.

I want to equip women to truly put God first — to truly give Him the first moments of their day — through this app,” TerKeurst said in a statement shared with The Christian Post.

So, instead of your verse of the day being random, you’ll start to sense real progress in your understanding of the Bible by using First 5 for just 5 minutes each morning,” the app promises in the “Welcome to First 5!” message on its news screen.

Google Play and the iTunes store), they are greeted with a message tied to the day’s devotional theme written by TerKeurst, or another member of the writing team.

On Monday, the day of the app’s premiere Bible study, the First five message was “Jesus Thought of You,” which was centered on the first chapter of the Gospel of John and also referred to verses from Genesis 1. The devotional links Jesus being “with God in the beginning” of creation to God’s “intentionality” and “purpose … woven into every created thing.” The apparent takeaway: God has a purpose for everyone.

When users get to the end of the brief devotional, they are then prompted to “Go deeper with today’s First 5 by writing in your Study of John Experience Guide.” If users do not have one, they can click on a link that takes them to the Proverbs 31 Ministries book store where The Book of John Experience Guide can be purchased for $13.

Users are also prompted to say a brief prayer in alignment with the day’s devotional message and to click on “read more” to navigate to a “More Moments” brief commentary about the book of the Bible being discussed, in this case, the Gospel of John.

Interaction in the app happens if users choose to leave a comment, and others “like” it by clicking a heart-shaped icon. When The Christian Post scrolled through the comments on the premiere Bible study, there were responses from about two dozen women, including a recent one from TerKeurst. Readers can also engage each other, and make friends, by exchanging messages after establishing a user account. The “My Moment” question — currently, “What is one way God wants to use you today?” — prompts users to jot down private notes about the day’s entry.

The First 5 app runs smoothly for the most part, although load time can lag (perhaps depending on the user’s phone type and/or its software platform). Some users might also find the alarmed notification slightly annoying as the buttons to choose to either “snooze” or “cancel” the alarm were very slow to appear when CP tested that function several times. Other users who have downloaded the app also noted functionality issues with the alarm feature.

The app appears to be much more popular with Apple users than those using Android devices, and overall, early reviews for First 5 were mostly positive.

Phone users who have the habit of reaching for their devices first thing in the morning might find First 5 to be just the thing they need to get their mind centered on God before rushing into the day’s activities.

An added bonus? — First 5 might help increase the number of Christians who spend time engaging with the Bible, although a majority of readers prefer the printed Word, according to a 2015 study by Barna Group and the American Bible Society. The 2015 study found that 76 percent of readers prefer printed Bibles versus the 11 percent that access Scripture via a smartphone or app. However, those numbers do not necessarily translate into actual reading of the Bible, especially for churchgoers.

A study from LifeWay Research found that only 45 percent of those who regularly attend church read the Bible more than once a week, while nearly 1 in 5 churchgoers said they just don’t read the Bible at all, according to a June article by Ed Stetzer, a church planter, researcher and missiologist.
